Eliptical Machines, A Better Way to Exercise
By Jim Kesel
An eliptical machine is probably the most efficient piece of exercise equipment that you can buy. Depending on the eliptical machine you use you will get a full body workout that will burn calories without injury. If you have ever spent any time on a treadmill you know how hard they are on your knees and sometime ankles. Belt slip on treadmills can really hurt you especially if you are heavier than 180 lbs. As your foot strikes the treadmill belt it momentarily stops and then slips forward before it continues move back towards you. You can tighten the belt on a treadmill but it will soon be back to slipping again. All this injury producing stress is absent when you use an eliptical machine.
Exercise on an eliptical machine has been described from running on air to running across a waterbed. It does feel unusual the first time you take any eliptical machine for a ride. It does not take long to begin to feel the all the advantages of using the eliptical machine. Most eliptical machines come with handles that move in unison with your stride to give the upper body workout that treadmills lack. There is another advantage that eliptical machines have over treadmills and that is "reduced felt exercise". Researchers have tried to put a finger on it but it is hard to describe. Basically when you exercise on an eliptical machine you burn more calories with less apparent felt effort. Riding an eliptical machine for an hour will appear to you to use a lot less effort than doing an hour on a treadmill. The result is that you tend to exercise more intensely and longer on an eliptical machine.
If you are looking for a quality piece of in home exercise equipment you can not beat an eliptical machine. When compared to a treadmill an eliptical machine has a smaller footprint and many models have the ability to fold up for storage. Eliptical machines take less power and some take no power at all allowing them to be sited just about anywhere in the house without running extension cords. In addition many elipticals have wheels so that it is easier to move the machine from one room to another. Prior to purchasing any eliptical trainer it is important to take the time to test the machine. Spend at least 20 minutes on each unit that you are considering. Do your research in terms of reliability. In addition no matter what elliptical machine you are considering you should consider an extended warranty. The bottom line is that there is no better piece of home exercise equipment than an eliptical machine.
